One application is: if you wish to prepare culture media with a view to growing certain oxygen-sensitive anaerobes not only must oxygen be excluded but the media needs to be pre-reduced. You use a SCE to check that the electrode potential which is expressed in mV is sufficiently negative for effective media use.
